The West End is to London what Broadway is to New York City. London’s musical theatre is world-renowned for its quality which is why its popularity grows each year, as highlighted by the increasing West End box office figures. You can’t leave London without catching a musical and thankfully, the city offers a variety of different performances.
One such performance is The Lion King at The Lyceum Theatre. Based on the animated Disney movie of the same name, the stage performance of The Lion King will bring a little bit of the African plains to the English capital. If you love the movie then you’ll love this too. You’ll hear songs written by Elton John and Tim Rice, including the show-stopping, Academy-award nominated tune, The Circle of Life.
Another musical that you might know first from the movie adaptation is Dreamgirls at the Savoy Theatre. The stage performance follows a female trio called The Dreams as they try to make it in 1960s America. This Tony-award winning show will have you swooning at its soulful R&B, including hit songs such as And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going and One Night Only.
One other show that you must catch if you’re stopping by the capital is Les Miserables at the Queen’s Theatre. This heart-wrenching tale, set in 19th century France, follows an ex-convict who is on the run from a policeman determined to get justice after the convict breaks his parole. Broken dreams, redemption, and unrequited love are just some of the themes of this stunning performance, and you’ll also hear iconic songs such as I Dreamed a Dream and On My Own.
