This remake of a George A. Romero film of the same name gets a better boost from some great makeup and CGI.  Add to this the brisk style and cunning storytelling of director Breck Eisner, and you have a decent package for the big screen. Filled with a lot action and suspense, The Crazies will be a delight to horror fans.

The story takes place in the small town of Ogden Marsh, where we find Sheriff David Dutton (Olyphant) at a little league baseball game rooting for his son’s team.  Suddenly a well-known citizen in a stupor comes walking across the baseball field with a shotgun and points it at Dutton.  He resists Dutton’s plea to put his gun down and gestures as if to shoot, whereupon Dutton kills the man.

With the town in shock, it’s the start of several mysterious happenings, including a man burning his family to death. There are some blood thirsty, depraved killers stalking the town, and Dutton has his hands full trying to control the folks and the Zombie-like humans.  When he finds out that this plight is caused by an unknown toxin in their water, he finds himself at war with the town and an influx of government soldiers using deadly force against his people.

I found the campy little horror flick interesting and suspenseful, that is, up until the reveal of what the toxin is and where it originated.  At this point the movie starts a downward spiral, but it does recover in the end.  The film is entertaining and the acting is quite good.  Olyphant makes a smart little sheriff who does everything in his power to help those around him escape the plight that has beset his city.  In support, Joe Anderson gives a better performance as his infected deputy who is loyal to the very end.

If you saw 28 Days Later, this little film could have been a great script for a prequel to that plot.  Director Eisner does his level best to make his film realistic and inventive, and almost pulls it off.  Of course, what may have been a little farcical to me, may just be your cup of tea.

According to MPAA guidelines the film is rated R for bloody violence and language, but I would throw in words like gross, sadistic and brutal.

FINAL ANALYSIS:  A fast-paced feast for horror geeks.
