Genre ComedyRomance
Year 2009
MPAA Rating PG-13

Anne Fletcher steps it up (pardon the pun) in this pleasant little movie that has date night written all over it.  The script is a little familiar, but the enjoyment comes from the personable chemistry between the lead actors, Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.  If you are in the mood for a romantic comedy, then watch conditional love blossom between these two stars in The Proposal.

The movie finds Margaret (Bullock), a strong-willed and acerbic book editor, in a pickle when her bosses tell her she will have to leave the company because her American work visa has run out.

Realizing this could hurt her career and send her packing back to Canada, she comes up with a fib that she is engaged to Andrew (Reynolds), her male secretary.  She orders Andrew to go along with her or he could loose his position with the company.  Andrew rebukes her proposal and in desperation she agrees to publish the novel he has written, and make him an editor.

When the INS doesn’t believe the couple and sets up an investigation into their relationship, the two fly to Andrew’s parent's home in Alaska for his grandmother’s birthday where they feel they can establish a defense.

The enjoyment of this film comes with all the craziness that transpires when the couple gets involved with Andrew’s overly lovable, quirky family -- and his past.

Steenburgen gives a great performance as the doting mother who takes over all the wedding arrangements when she finds out the two are engaged. Top acting kudos go to Betty White for her portrayal of Gammy, Andrew’s 90 year-old grandmother who sees the toughness in Margaret and dishes out a little of her own, but in ways that had me laughing out loud.

What makes the familiar plot work is the chemistry between Bullock and Reynolds that has to be partly credited to director Fletcher’s hard work in keeping the high profile cast in tandem with each other.

The only downside I found was the miscast of the character of Gertrude (Akerman), Andrew’s prior Alaskan romance interest, as she is a charming lovable beauty and brings a little doubt to a ‘left her behind’ plot point when she shows up mid-way though the film.

FINAL ANALYSIS: The Proposal makes a great dinner-and-a-movie for us romantics.
