If it’s a lot of intense excitement with comedic relief that you are looking for, then Knight and Day will do the trick.  The high-powered spy thriller takes you up and down and then spins you around. It’s a cool roller coaster ride.  And there’s a great deal of nonsense, absurdities and other impossible mayhem, and that’s what makes the film fun to watch.

June Havens (Cameron Diaz) checks into the airport for her flight from Wichita, Kansas while coincidentally Roy Miller (Tom Cruise), a secret agent, has done the same.  The event brings the two together on an ill-fated flight that ends them in a cornfield.  Totally frightened and out of control, June tries to distance herself from Miller but to no avail.  With June in tow, Miller starts several days of craziness while escaping the clutches of his pursuers who are after the key to perpetual energy that he possesses.  When things start to look their bleakest, June starts to blossom into the person she didn’t know was in her.

Cruise and Diaz are exciting together, as the pursued and the innocent, making their way around the world running for their lives.  It all makes sense, or does it?  But, that’s what makes Knight and Day fun.  You never know what is going to happen next, from amazing car chases to inconceivable getaways, the two cross-the-globe, barely escaping entrapments.  I like Tom Cruise, but Cameron even better as she won my heart showing her range in films like Gangs of New York, What Happens in Vegas and the classic farce There’s Something About Mary.

The film does have faults. The director seems to like close-ups a lot, and there’s some odd camera jiggling that bothered me.  In addition, time doesn’t seem to matter to the plot, and costume changes are far and few between.  As for character development, except for the two main characters, there isn’t much of that either.

The film is rated PG-13 for sequences of action violence throughout, and brief strong language.

FINAL ANALYSIS:  A very good action film filled with unbelievable escapes.
