The trick-or-treaters have gone home on this Halloween eve and you are exhausted from giving out candy to the cute little goblins.  It’s time to settle back, take off your costume, grab your significant other, slam this Trick ‘r Treat DVD into your player, and get ready for the scare of the night.

From producer Bryan Singer (director of X-men and Superman Returns) and writer-director Michael Dougherty (co-scripter of X2 and Superman Returns) comes a multi-tale bag of wicked yarns, four cleverly interlocked stories surrounding all the things you are accustomed to do these days, like checking the kids candy, leaving the jack-o-lantern lit until midnight, and locking (no bolting) the doors before retiring.

During this night a high school principal moonlights as a vicious serial killer, Red Riding Hood takes an interesting turn in the forest, a group of youngsters carry out a cruel prank with disastrous consequences and a cantankerous old man battles a mischievous trick-or-treating demon.

This film takes you on a scare fest of ghouls, vampires, the walking dead, werewolves and killers, with twists and turns that make the film fun yet scary to watch.  I like the way director Dougherty intertwines each tale, dropping clues that lead to the next story, that is even more frightening than the last. It’s not until the very end that he makes you aware of the means by which it is all held together.

The acting in Trick ‘r Treat is first rate, and each of the characters depicted are as ghastly as the next.  I found myself thinking, "Oh what a great costume for Halloween," only to be mortified by the gory deeds the person performed.  The makeup, props and CGI here help to make the freaks, demons and gremlins very real, providing the tools for the actors to play out their fiendish parts.

The bonus features in Treak ‘r Treat include a widescreen and full-screen version, and a brilliant animated feature called Trick 'R Treat: Season's Greetings with optional commentary by director Michael Dougherty. The movie is in DVD and Blu-ray formats.

FINAL ANALYSIS: A very cool way to spend Hallows' Eve.
