College Student Sleep Patterns Could be Damaging PDF Print E-mail

A Central Michigan University study has determined that many college students have sleep patterns that could have detrimental effects on their daily performance.

As a graduate student, CMU alumna LeAnne Forquer, now a psychology faculty member at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., had her own trouble sleeping, prompting her to conduct a study to determine if other students experienced the same problems.

Along with CMU psychology professor Carl Johnson, Forquer surveyed more than 300 college students, many of whom admitted that it took longer than 30 minutes for them to fall asleep and/or they woke more than once a night for at least five nights a week. (I know the feeling!)

I Am Legend: Big Screen to Real Life PDF Print E-mail
Written by Danielle Mantione

I am Legend For many years it seems that scientist have been searching for a way to cure cancer. The film I Am Legend, starring Will Smith, presents a fictitious world in which that cure has been found.

In the film, research scientists have injected reovirus into the entire world's population, in order to do away with cancerous cells. The results however, did not pan out as planned. 99% of all people have become infected with a deadly virus that has killed almost all of them, leaving only a handful of infected humans behind. The remaining 1% not infected with the virus were indeed immune and must live among the bloodthirsty and murderous infected humans.

Although I Am Legend may seem to be slightly far-fetched, a Canadian scientist has actually been using the reovirus as a potential cure for cancer.

Rising Gas Prices, Higher Stress, Lower Productivity PDF Print E-mail

We've all done it -- driven by the gas station and cursed under our breath. It seems everyday now the prices just keep going higher and higher. And naturally, the U.S. resident chief, George Bush, does nothing about it. He's all about helping out his friends and himself. Who cares about the little people right?

Already though, business is being affected across the country by this rise in gasoline. Wayne Hochwarter of the Florida State University's College of Business surveyed more than 800 full-time employees across the southeastern United States this spring when gas prices hovered at about $3.50 per gallon (of course now prices are well beyond that) and found employees are simply unable to detach themselves from the stress caused by escalating gas prices.

The Showcase Must Go On PDF Print E-mail
Written by Uni Pereira

uni_pic2.jpg There comes a time in every indie artist's career when all of the writing, recording, self-promoting, etc., is done and there is nothing left to do but play. And not just for the rows of screaming fans that made you want to do this in the first place. I'm talking about another faction, those who could prove to be instrumental to the ultimate success or failure of your career: labels, managers, booking agents, and the like.

Often, this is done in a showcase setting. A showcase is the ultimate make or break time. It's ‘Every Breath You Take' time. Every step you take, they'll be watching you. From how you walk out on stage, to the way you handle yourself after the performance, you're under the microscope, like an organism, dissected down to the smallest action.

Destroying America One Mountain at a Time PDF Print E-mail
Written by Allie Mathews

southernappalachia.jpg I live in Southern Appalachia. The cliché majestic mountains can't hold up to the beauty I am blessed to see everyday. My firm belief, as well as many others, is that these mountains are here to stay forever; they were here long before us, and will last long after us. My viewpoint changed when I realized one of the most richly diverse places on our planet is being destroyed and sooner than imagined, the mountains in Appalachia will be gone, and what's worse, we're to blame.

Not many know that mountains are being demolished in the Southern Appalachian states of Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and most recently Tennessee. Why do you ask? What reason can there be to blow up mountain tops, wiping out natural habitats and completely destroying mountains past what they can handle? The answer is a simple corporate term -- Coal.
