Ever wonder what would’ve happened if your favorite company got all of its hit characters, put them in one game, and just said beat the crud out of each other? Well then obviously you’ve never heard of Super Smash Bros. Brawl (SSBB), the newest edition to the Nintendo Wii’s library of truly magnificent games.
In case you aren’t familiar with the Super Smash Bros. series, let me give you a quick overview. Mario, Samus, Link, Pikachu, Donkey Kong, Fox & Others are all put on famous arenas from there own games and forced to do battle. Since the original Super Smash Bros. there have been some improvements.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is utterly, and without a doubt, one of the best games for the Wii. The graphics are up to par with those of the PS3 and the Xbox 360, and they don’t even have the hardware for that.
A new favorite for fans has been the introduction of Smash Balls. In the form of the SSB logo, when broken, these items give the breaker the ability to do an ultimate attack (For example: Link slashes opponents with a tri-force, Fox brings out a tank, and Pikachu turns into an electric ball of power).
SSBB marks the first game in the series to include third party characters. With cooperation from companies such as Konami and Sega, great characters like Snake (Metal Gear Solid) and the lightning-blue hedgehog Sonic enter the fray.
The game has 41 stages ranging from the Animal Crossing Series (with a stage that adjusts itself to the Wii’s internal clock), to the Wario Ware Series (which has various mini-games that pop up and make you play them for rewards). They even have recreated versions of classic games such as the original Donkey Kong and Mario Bros, and if you don’t like these stages, SSBB gives you the ability to create your own stages!
Another one of the many appeals of SSBB is the creative element. You can take pictures at any time of just about anything; you can save your favorite brawls, and even make a diorama with stickers and trophies! Not only that, but there is enough unlockables to have you playing this game for months after you get it…and trust me you’ll still be loving it.
Unlike it’s predecessors (Super Smash Bros. & Super Smash Bros. Melee) SSBB has a unique story mode. In the world of trophies the Nintendo icons fight a mysterious enemy flipping the world into a twisted universe called Subspace. Like a classic side-scroller, it has you playing as just about everyone at different times, fighting enemies and bosses, trying to get to the final confrontation with the grand master of Subspace.
There are only two down-sides to SSBB, and they are minor at best. First, the online play is fabulous…if you’re playing with friends. If you select the find a battle feature, you have no freedom to change options, which makes the 2-minute matches boring after a while. Also, even though you have the freedom to choose four different ways of controlling your characters, there is no activity with the Wii mote, making some call this a really good looking "game-cube" game.
This is a MUST-BUY. It appeals to all ages and genders, which is what the Wii was said to accomplish. Whether fighting your best friend or your grandfather, you’re always having fun.
