Placebo's Meds - Refill Your iPod Print E-mail

Image Placebo, Brian Molko, Stefan Olsdal, and Steve Hewitt, has put together a great set of songs for their latest album, Meds, a Virgin Records re-release of a CD originally released in the United States in 2006 by Astralwerks.

{mosgoogle right} The title track is solid and the voice of Mosshart makes it sufficiently haunting. Their sound is reminiscent of the music you’d hear in a shadowy club late at night, getting the blood pounding through your veins. It’s the music that accompanies an emotional suicide in a movie about facing and discovering life. It could be classified as alternative whine-rock, and in this, Placebo excels. While the label hardly seems promising, Placebo takes the description and exceeds the standard expectations.

While Placebo’s music may blend with the drone associated with that image, it is not confused with the drone. It is finely crafted work, solid rock. While some whine-rock pointlessly complains about the difficulties of being alive, Placebo’s essence is more existential and philosophizing, a cut deeper, more penetrating. "Pierrot the Clown" is more melodic than the other tracks on Meds, and is almost epiphanaic in a supernatural, eerie way. Placebo’s mastery of the world of sound transforms the medium in which they jam.

Placebo specializes in unique intros and solid melodies...invigorated beats. "Lazarus", for instance, starts with an almost wind-up-doll-like melody that turns into a calibrated, steady rock beat, then plunges into a chorus both wild and steady simultaneously.

For the Virgin release of Meds , Placebo added several songs and redid others. They are joined by Michael Stipe (REM) and Alison Mosshart (the Kills) on two separate tracks. The band has been touring Europe for a series of sold out shows and will be playing in the U.S. this spring.

Check out their official site or MySpace for upcoming tour dates and news.
