Critique:
This musical thriller is a great visual stream of sprinkled color and dominating gloom. Depp and Carter are spot on in their performances, giving the film a certain edge of individuality.
Aside from the fabulous cinematography, the free-flowing storyline and the above-par cast, Sweeney Todd delivers a deliciously evil concept with a twist -- most of its lines are sung, not spoken. Who'd have thought Johnny-boy was a singer? He doesn't do half bad actually.
On the two-disc set there are many features to click through. The Making Of, Sweeney Todd is Alive and Musical Mayhem are all gems in a set of better-than-average DVD featurettes. The one down-side to the DVD is the sound quality. I found myself continuously turning the volume up and down the entire way through as the singing and music blast out in contrast with the little speaking done in the film, which fizzled into unintelligible mumblings.
FINAL ANALYSIS: Overlooking the sound issue, this DVD set is well put together with some great bonus features, a story to die for and a classy case to hold it all together.
