 Rated: PG Finally
a film that the whole family can enjoy, Nim’s Island, a comedy adventure with
heart. Although pointed at young girls
between the ages of 7 and 14, the film plays well to adults on a more mature
level. And don’t be afraid to take young
boys along as the main character could have easily been written for any gender.
Nim
(Breslin), a young girl, lives on a deserted tropical island with her
oceanographic father Jack (Butler),
a widower due to a tragic accident involving a blue whale. Nim has lived most of her eleven years on the
island and has made many animal friends. She is content with the world around

When Nim gets a new book about her
favorite character Alex Rover from a passing cargo ship, she turns down Jack’s
weekly excursion trip to the coral reefs to look for his one-celled amoebic
wonder. In the meantime, thousands of
miles away in San Francisco
lives the writer of the Alex Rover books, Alexandra (Foster), who is stuck on
an ending to her newest novel. When Jack
comes up missing from his reef trip, a strange set of circumstances brings Nim
and Alexandra together.
Breslin
does a great job of bringing her character to life and she has some great
animal characters to help her. The
island-bound girl is right at home playing sports with her pet seal, roving the
tropical forest with her lizard and having fun with a life-saving pelican. She lives all the adventure a young girl
could dream about, and does it well.
In
support, Foster provides the comic relief as the agoraphobic adventure writer
who travels thousands of miles to save Nim.
Foster hasn’t played many comical roles, but she holds her own as the
fumbling and grumbling OCD miss-adventurer who gets into some very funny
situations.
The
only downside is that everything on Nim’s Island
is too perfect. With no Macy’s or Target
close by, you would think the niceties would be scarce, but their faultless
home sits in a lush tropical forest with a view of the pristine beach.
Their carefree life is all too good to be true.
But, the upside is, the kids won’t even notice. So mom and dad just roll with it and enjoy
the gorgeous cinematography and start saving for that trip to the Fiji Islands!
FINAL ANALYSIS: Nim’s Island is an excellent family entertainment film filled
with adventure and witty comedy.
