This weekend is the start of one of
the most upper-crust film festivals in America, the Palm Beach International
Film Festival. It is taking place only stones throw from the Atlantic Ocean. The schedule boasts over 140 features,
documentaries and short films from the United States and around the world. The festival runs through April 15, and most
of the film screenings will take place at Misner Park in Boca Raton, Florida at
the southern end of West Palm Beach County.
The festival will honor several film stars including actor Mickey Rooney, who became a star as a youngster in a 1926 film playing a little person. He will be honored with the Legend In Film Award at a $1,000-a-plate dinner sponsored by the festival. Rooney starred in 311 film, theatre and television productions. He went under the screen name Mickey McGuire for the films, using that name from the early 1920s through the early 1930s, until he took on the role of Andy Hardy. At that point he changed his name to Mickey Rooney, and completed ten years of that very successful series. Finally noticed as a star to be reckoned with, his career took off, playing opposite some of the best-of-all-time film stars including Thomas Mitchell, Judy Garland, Bob Hope, Dick Van Dyke and most recently, Ben Stiller in Night at the Museum. Other honorees at this year's festival will include; a Lifetime Achievement Award to Actor Louis Gossett, Jr. (Roots, Iron Eagle, The Principal, Enemy Mine, An Officer and a Gentleman, The Deep, The Choirboys, and 147 other film and TV productions); Visionary Award to Director/Writer/Actor Jason Reitman (Kindergarten Cop, Juno, Thank You for Smoking), Showmanship Award to Actress Cheryl Hines (Waitress, The Grand and Bart Got a Room) and Horizon Award to Actor Josh Hutcherson (Bridge to Terabithia, Kicking and Screaming and American Splendor) If you are going to the festival please consult the updated schedule at their website www.pbifilmfest.com |
