This Weekend- April 18-20!
Jordin Sparks, will.i.am, Ne-Yo, Doug E. Fresh, Talib Kweli, Chrisette Michele, and The Bacon Brothers are just some of the artists performing for free at eight landmark parks in some of the largest cities across the country. Event cities include: New York City (Central Park), Chicago (Lincoln Park Zoo), Miami (Bicentennial Park), Denver (City Park), Dallas (Fair Park), San Francisco (Golden Gate Park), Los Angeles (Santa Monica Pier) and Washington DC on the National Mall.

The Earth Day Network & Green Apple Festival presented by Chase chose parks with eco-considerations and with presence of an organic atmosphere. That means you can walk, ride your bike, take the bus or hop on a train to a place where the air is fresher and the grass is greener. What’s better than a park to support environmental awareness, where you can lounge around with your family and friends to listen to free music from great artists, and have fun in a place that no less preserves nature? What’s even better is that all eight parks will be hosting the event simultaneously starting on April 18th and culminating on April 20th.

Since 2006, when The Green Apple Festival began in New York City, the event has galvanized music fans, environmentalists, progressive consumers and families in a growing number of cities on Earth Day by providing "something for everyone" events with music performances, family entertainment and interactive exhibits at public locations.

With a "small footprint, large impact" ethos, their mission includes:

  • Over 125 venues to become "Green Apple Venues" over Earth Day Weekend, the Festival organizers will introduce eco-friendly practices/products as a new way of doing business.
  • With Native Energy, a leader in the space of offsets, the entire undertaking will be made carbon neutral.
  • The plan to carry out school greening projects in three markets, in low-income neighborhoods.
  • Through education, politics, and consumer activism, Earth Day Network seeks to grow and diversify the environmental movement worldwide, and to mobilize it as the most effective vehicle for promoting a healthy, sustainable planet.

Earth Day Network combines the forces of its 500,000 activists and members to mobilize action on the most pressing environmental issues. They have a global reach with a network of more than 17,000 partners and organizations in 174 countries. More than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest secular civic event in the world. So if you didn’t think it was possible for so many people to care about our planet (yes our planet, your's and mine)—think again! Earth Day is not a myth, it's a reality (like global warming)--we can make the difference this year and go green.

Don’t forget, the Earth Day Weekend is this weekend (April 18-20)! It's the 39th Earth Day since 1970.

For those of us living far from these cities, there are plenty of ways to support Earth Day. Check out the official sites to find out how your "small footprint "can make a "large impact." Or, start by reading our review of the DVD, The 11th Hour: A Chilling Eye-Opener, to become more environmentally conscious. Check out the 11th Hour official site and the DVD.
