Rated: PG-13 Michael Caine and Demi Moore team
up in this zany heist drama, and the two veterans pulled off fine acting
performances. If you like your movies
with a good plot that challenges your mind and keeps you thinking about it long
after you leave the theatre, then this gem is for you.
It’s
the 1960s in London, and Laura Quinn (Moore) finds herself the
only female executive in the largest diamond corporation in the world. Unfortunately, because she is a woman, she
has been passed over six times for a big promotion. The nighttime janitor, Hobbs (Caine), has befriended Quinn and finds
out that she is due to be discharged over a bogus report that involves a
Russian diamond cartel.
At first Quinn doesn’t believe Hobbs, but after snooping around the
secretary’s office, she finds the papers outlining her future termination. When Hobbs
approaches her with a plan to get back at the diamond dealers, Quinn hops on
for the ride, knowing full well that it not only can get her fired, but land her
in jail.
It was
wonderful seeing Moore and Caine together in Flawless. It reminded me of Moore’s acting during her hay day with films
like Disclosure, The Juror and A Few Good Men. I can still remember her crafty, chilling
performance in Disclosure where big business and sexual harassment were the
issue.
Here Moore gives us a character
consumed by the overwhelming power of the diamond industry bosses who take her
shrewd advice and keep her trapped below the glass ceiling. Her determination for revenge is the only
hope she has to keep her sanity.
Caine always gives his best in a film and
Flawless is no exception. Here he shows
off his cunning side as he did in Sleuth. Hobbs
is a man with a brilliant idea and he wants to carry it out with a
passion. His only problem is that he
needs an accomplice and when he finds out Quinn’s dilemma, he convinces her to
sign on. The two have great chemistry
together and that’s what makes this film work.
Starring: Michael Caine, Demi Moore and Lambert Wilson
FINAL ANALYSIS:
Flawless is a great film for a dinner and a date, yet still fun for teens
that may like an out-of-the-ordinary heist film.
