Rated: R I am a huge fan of suspense
thrillers, but 88 Minutes just doesn’t make my cut. The film does have some very good moments, and
for that I have to tip my hat, but watching Al Pacino run around ‘Seattle’ for
88 minutes was too much for me.
And, the
plot has so many inaccuracies and holes in it, that even the average moviegoer
will be distracted. If you are a fan
of suspense films, and you give 88 Minutes a chance, wear some gloves because
when you bite your finger each time you are mislead by the writer, it won’t
hurt so much.
Jack Gramm (Pacino), a reputable
forensic psychiatrist, gives the damning testimony that sends accused serial
killer Jon Forster (McDonough) to die in a Seattle prison. Seven years later, on the eve of the intended
Foster execution, Gramm gets an ominous call on his cell phone that he will die
in 88 Minutes.
Starting with that call,
Gramm finds himself on the run questioning his students, security guards and
even doubting himself while the cops keep turning up bodies with the same modus
operandi as the ‘Seattle Slayer’ serial killer he sent to prison.
The media
gets an interview with Forster and he accuses Gramm of lying on the witness
stand. With a killer trying to murder
Gramm, cops wanting to bring him in for questioning, and other murders still happening,
his time is running out on his sanity and his life.
Although the plot is kind-of
interesting, the time element, coupled with the inconceivable murders, killers
and evidence, just isn’t reasonable in the finale. And that’s what makes the
film implausible.
I did like the acting of Alicia
Witt who plays one of Gramm’s students.
She not only portrayed her character well, but her wicked personality
added some great suspense to the film. I
only wish the writer gave more reason’s why her character was challenging Gramm
so much. As far as Pacino goes, I believe
he was miscast. Getting on in years he
looked a little disheveled and did not fit the profile of the character, that in
reality, would have to do the things that were depicted on the screen.
Starring: Al Pacino, Alicia Witt, LeeLee Sobieski, Amy Brenneman, Debra Kara Unger, Benjamin McKenzie, and Neil McDonough
FINAL ANALYSIS: 88
Minutes is filled with plot holes and the ending is too fabricated.
