Image What does it mean to be loyal? Up and coming private school student Rayna (Tracey Armstrong) must answer this question and several others when family issues and financial problems collide. How She Move attempts to uncover the soul of a young woman determined to rise above the projects and move into her destiny, but Rayna’s desire for academic excellence propels her to make some very flaky decisions.

Lies are told, friendships lost and some begin anew. And with step serving as catharsis and meal tickets, Rayna learns that true success comes from having a balanced life. Special guest stars include Keisha Cole and DeRay Davis.

Bonus Features:

  • The Characters of How She Move
  • How She Move: From Rehearsal to Film
  • How She Move: Telling Her Story

How She Move had the potential to be more than just another dance movie. Caribbean music replaced the Hip Hop and R&B, which are staples of every urban dance movie made so far. This influence is evident in the accents of some characters and cultural references of others. Unfortunately, the impact that culture has on step is never addressed.

Unlike Stomp the Yard, How She Move never attempts to ground step in some form of history. Why is it important? Why was it started? Who does it have an impact on? The closest we come to answering any of those questions is the movie’s attempt to link Rayna’s passion for dance with other members in her family. It would have been nice to see the historical importance of step, along with the Caribbean influences addressed on screen.
