 Rated: PG-13 There’s a very entertaining flick
at theatres, it’s called Baby Mama. I
loved the very funny plot and the great comedic acting of Fey, Poehler and
Martin. I
wanted to compare it with last year’s Juno, but couldn’t because while Juno
brought compassion to the screen about being a surrogate mother, Baby Mama delivers hilarious
comedy. It is not anything like I expected.
Successful and single businesswoman Kate Holbrook
(Fey) has long put her career ahead of a personal life. Now 37, she's finally
determined to have a kid on her own. But her plan is thrown a curve ball after
she discovers she has only a million-to-one chance of getting pregnant.
Undaunted, the driven Kate allows
South Philly working girl Angie Ostrowiski (Poehler) to become her unlikely
surrogate. Simple enough ... After learning from the steely head of their
surrogacy center that Angie is pregnant, Kate goes into precision nesting mode:
reading childcare books, baby-proofing the apartment and researching top
pre-schools. But the executive's well-organized strategy is turned upside down
when her Baby Mama shows up at her doorstep with no place to live. - Universal Pictures
Fey
gives a great performance playing Kate, who's determined to be a mother. After trying many ways, including trying to
impregnate herself with sperm from a donor lab, her decision to have a
surrogate comes with trepidation, and rightly so. Her co-star Poehler plays the off-the-wall
surrogate Angie with great comedic ineptness, making the character totally fun. The two make the film work as a great evening
for any audience.
Martin
gives great support, adding to the enjoyment with his special style of
humor. As Kate’s boss Barry, he’s the
guru of organic foods. Martin has been
one of my favorite comedians for a long time and has been featured in some
films that have turned out to be classics; like The Jerk, Cheaper By The
Dozen, Three Amigos, and Roxanne.
In addition to Martin, Weaver appears as Chaffee Bicknell, the head of
the surrogate agency. Her acting skills
are still intact, playing the aloof entrepreneur who thinks she is bringing love
to people, even though she can have kids and flaunts it openly.
Starring: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Sigourney Weaver, Dax Shepard, Greg Kinnear, Steve Martin
FINAL ANALYSIS: Baby Mama is an
entertaining comedy that gives birth to great laughs.
