Rising Gas Prices, Higher Stress, Lower Productivity Print E-mail
Feature Articles - General Feature

We've all done it -- driven by the gas station and cursed under our breath. It seems everyday now the prices just keep going higher and higher. And naturally, the U.S. resident chief, George Bush, does nothing about it. He's all about helping out his friends and himself. Who cares about the little people right?

Already though, business is being affected across the country by this rise in gasoline. Wayne Hochwarter of the Florida State University's College of Business surveyed more than 800 full-time employees across the southeastern United States this spring when gas prices hovered at about $3.50 per gallon (of course now prices are well beyond that) and found employees are simply unable to detach themselves from the stress caused by escalating gas prices.

Many of these people surveyed are so stressed in fact they are less attentive on the job, less excited about going to work, less passionate and conscientious and more tense, and depressed.

The gas dilemma is affecting more than just those commuting to work (and don't think those taking public transportation aren't affected...those prices have gone up too), college students have also been severely affected by the rising prices.

More and more people are canceling vacations, making less ventures out of their own homes to local hot spots, paying less on their credit debts because they need the extra money to fuel their cars and their tummys (yes, food has shot up its prices as well).

Nearly 30 percent surveyed considered the consequences of going without basics like food, clothing and medicine as they just could not afford them.

The bottom line is, everything is going to be more expensive from now on thanks to the those lovely people in the government right now. Yes! A great idea, give the billion-dollar-making oil companies a ton of tax cuts, allow them to increase their price per barrel and pass the popcorn while the American people flail to their financial death! Muwhwhahahaahahaha.

It is a sad, sad predicament -- one that could have been avoided if those in power had not abused the power given to them. It's all about the money they are getting from this, and make no mistake -- they are making plenty of money off of ALL YOU suckers.

I have had to cancel two trips of my own this year. I don't go out at all on the weekends, unless it is down the street to grab a few necessities. Forget about frivolous purchases like a new CD/DVD Rom drive on my laptop because mine has busted, even though I really need it for working my second job.

I, like many others in this country, am considered "middle class", but I am not. I am one step short of the all-new and improved impoverished six-feet-under class. So low the lower class shivers with terror. We are taxed and taxed and taxed some more. We pay the tax for the wealthy, as they get all the breaks, and we pay for the things those who make less than us can't pay. We are the country's surrogate mothers. And boy, are we screwed.

I am all for helping out U.S. families (citizens or LEGAL residents only please) that have no way to make "ends meet" because they are always getting stuck by the man...but I am really not cool with paying for these fat-lipped, corporate leeches to make more money with their environment-poisoning brews of oil and lies.

I am tired of watching my friends ride their bikes 10 - 15 miles to school because they can't afford to drive anymore. I am sick of watching my friends eat packets of Ramen Noodles because they can't afford to eat healthy -- or better yet -- real meals. And -- if a college student is worrying about biking home for miles or what their next meal is going to be, do you think they are paying attention in class? I think not.

Unfortunately, this country has gone soft -- its people, I mean. We all complain, yet we do absolutely nothing about it. We all suffer, but no one helps relieve the problem. Everyone continues to go about their daily routines as much as possible with their head bent and their tails between their legs, thinking "maybe if we ignore it it will fix itself." Dream on.

Whatever happened to America for the people, by the people? When did we lose our voice? Why are we letting these twisted corporate devastators rule us?

Most people just keep filtering their surroundings by firmly burying their heads in television and games, pop culture scams and petty dramas, but one day, when you do pull that head out of the sand, don't complain -- you helped make this country what it is just by doing nothing...Just shut up and help us re-weave the American flag from stars to corporate logos. Long live global corporate dominance! (Yes, that is sarcasm). I wonder what hand-arm motion we will make once that goes into full effect...

Amen. I have to work 10 hours a day now just to save up to graduate early because I'm out of money for college. So many people have to put their whole future on hold because we can't afford to eat and put gas in the car. Some America. [smiley=think]

The worst part is, dear Jenna, that I can totally feel you here, and I'm NOT american. I feel you because I still can't believe that a country with so many great things somehow got that man re elected, hence suffering him for 8 years (I know, I know, I'm not american, so I'm not entitled to talk about intern politics. But the world has eyes *sighs*).

And I feel you, and this is the real tragedy, because that could be my speech, the speech from another country. Something's happening, and I guess it's the same that's been happening forever, only now it's getting critical, and our politicians make me sick. But how did the saying go? The real fault lies before the people who allow this. But I odn't know there, but here most people are satisfied with complaining.

*Off to think a little more before self combustion*

We could go on strike like all these writers and actors...public, peace marches, death to corporations by not buying their products. Only going to gas stations that DO NOT buy from the Middle East...Pay attention to the things you do buy and consume and where you money is going...Those are things anyone can do.

yea, I know! It's why I'm moving. But what can we do about it? What do we do now? I want to know. All I constantly hear is that you do your part by voting. But hell, look where that got us. A retard for a president for two consecutive terms.
