Rowling Wins Battle to Protect her Children from Media Hounds Print E-mail

jkrowling_pic.jpgJ.K. Rowling, author of the popular Harry Potter books, first filed a lawsuit against the Big Pictures photo agency for covertly taking photos of her toddler son without permission back in 2004.

A High Court judge had initially ruled in favor of the photo agency, however, this decision was overturned by appeals court judges.

Appellate judges have now ruled the media may not publish photos of the young children of British novelist J.K. Rowling without her permission.

"We embarked on this lawsuit not because we were seeking special privileges for our children but because we wanted them to grow up, like their friends, free from unwarranted intrusion into their privacy," Rowling and her husband Neil Murray said in a statement released to the Telegraph.

"We understand and accept that with the success of 'Harry Potter' there will be a measure of legitimate media and public interest in Jo's professional activities and appearances. However, we have striven to give our children a normal family life outside the media spotlight. We are immensely grateful to the Court for giving our children protection from covert, unauthorized photography; this ruling will make an immediate and material difference to their lives."

Everyone knows there are legitimate reasons for the media to take photos at approved events, shoots or interviews, but there is never any reason for covert-op picture taking of someone's children. It is irresponsible and unnecessary, putting these children's safety at risk. Hopefully one day there will be a ruling that will cover unauthorized photography of ALL celebrity children.

I full heartidly agree. No one should be allowed to take pictures of someone's children without their knowledge and expressed permission. It's all just so dispicable.
