The Revisionists Print E-mail
Written by Paula Ryland

Coming June 24, unfiltered and unrestrained, this self-titled debut is the pinnacle of "less is more". The Revisionists pack the album with all the punk gusto you can muster using only the bare essentials. Living up to their name, The Revisionists will change how you hear music.

Friends but not yet bandmates, the members found themselves in the studio together, and the latest addition to the well known roster at Loveless Records. Dan Lavery and Kevin Shepard were members of the mid-90s post-grunge band Tonic. Sam Jones is the director of the Wilco documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, and producer of some of the best records on Loveless' roster (Tom Brossueau, The Shackeltons).

Having played in several bands, toured the world several times, and collectively sold several millions of records, the trio discovered mutual influences in The Clash, The Jam, David Foster Wallace and others that shaped them as musicians. "We were immediately a band and we had a purpose," says Jones.

Previewing the band on MySpace I was initially doubtful of the healing claim in their categorization tags: Rock/Punk/Healing & Easy Listening. After listening though I agree, but easy to listen to is not the same as easy listening Smile .

Their offering begins with up-tempo, decompression rock and roll that just pumps you up. Buzzing electric guitar, pounding piano and lyrics, that for the most part, still come through. The mildly explicit lyrics, most notable on the anthemic "Mr. Stupid", are probably not enough to prevent mainstream air play. They tackle the frustration of hangers on that just don't want to take no for an answer on "Monday".

Later in the album they move into simultaneously addressing environmental issues and our escapist attitude toward bad news in "IDWK" (hey, we all get that way sometimes). If you like to rock I would put that on your play list.
