The British electro-rock band has just released their first album, You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into, to rave reviews from major mags on both sides of the ocean. NME (their home country's top music magazine) hails their genius almost every chance it gets. Easy to see why, as the title of the LP evokes itself rather easily in the wake of their live show. Regular looking blokes, they blend into a crowd and illicit surprised murmurings among the cheers when they appear on stage; even from the peeps who showed up specifically to see them (which, incidentally, turned out to be way over half the joint) at the sold out show. Morgan Quaintance (vocals, synths, guitar) says he has a surprise for us, and does away with his jumper to reveal the cheesiest of tourist garb: an "I Love NY" tee. And then they get to it, slamming into "We Are Rock Stars" with as much young male bravado as the space allows. The set is fast and furious, never once slowing down. Leaving out some of the more melodious electro-pop/rock tracks from the album such as "Dawn Of The Dead" and "Epic Last Song" (which got plenty of requests from the screaming spectators), DIOYY opted to play a hard-edged set chock-a-block full of intense, driving anthems wailing out the cherry troubles connected to love, partying and a whole lot of nothing but good beats and electrifying synth. Favs like "Let's Make Out", "Weird Science" and "Battle Royale" served to pump the crowd to amazingly high levels of hysterics. Our photographer got playfully patted on the head, bangs shuffled asunder while Morgan climbed the speakers; keys escaped the confines of jumping pockets, cell phones went flying, heads bobbed dangerously close to break-neck speeds. The ordinary lads from the UK came and reduced a bunch of sweaty, bald, goth-punk, meat-heads to head banging wanna-be hair band groupies in no seconds flat. Indie girls cried their black eye shadow down their cheeks. It was astounding. A great rousing sing-a-long of "With A Heavy Heart" showcased James Rushent's (bass, vocals) closeted exhibitionism, while the astoundingly unassuming Dan Coop (dude looks like a car salesmen) banged the hell out of the synth keys. Yeah. We had no idea what we were getting into. Their sound is diverse, even bouncing off the sides of the electro-rock category box. Their showmanship is amazing. They love the hell out of the U.S. "Thanks a lot America! Salt of the f***ing earth! Cheers!" They play the crap out of Devo when prompted for an encore. And in our eyes, if you make "Whip It" sound better than the original on a live stage while the masses nearly jump themselves into a seizure, you're ace. You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourselves Into is out now. Pick it up, yeah?
