Far from the stereotypical picture of overly feminine, flamboyant gays and drags, where love is rendered as forbidden and taboo, Shelter is as natural as the love between a man and a woman. Still, the underlying story is not about homosexuality, but finding a balance between love and family. Encompassing intricate conflicts, bold and universal themes and tasteful love scenes, this film breaks down barriers of what normal is presumed to be, and it is both uplifting and empowering.

Zach (Wright) is a talented young man whose life is at a standstill. With his heart in the right place, he struggles to care for his dysfunctional family through dead-end jobs and practically raises his nephew, Cody (Jackson Wurth), while his neglectful sister Jeanne (Holmes) attends to her own needs. Any dreams for the future are placed on hold and the choices he made in the past haunt him with unhappiness.

Finding refuge only in art and surfing, Zach unexpectedly bumps into Shaun (Rowe), his best friend's brother, on his way to their beach house. Zach's reunion with Shaun rekindles happier memories of his childhood, and instills a need to plan for his future. Finding an unusual comfort in Shaun's presence, Zach awakens another feeling he hadn't known ever existed before.

Split between what others might believe to be right and wrong, Zach keeps his relationship with Shaun a secret. Only after his secret is revealed and tensions arise does Zach battle his desire and has to choose between what is important to him -- love or family.

Rarely are there films that address this subject matter without seeming vulgar and inappropriate. The wonderful direction, visually stunning cinematography and brilliant acting easily make this remarkably beautiful portrait about love and acceptance both touching and enduring.

Starring: Trevor Wright, Brad Rowe, Tina Holmes, Ross Thomas, Katie Walder

Final Thought: Shelter is a must-see that will fill the heart and incite the senses with the compassion to understand why love is blind. We tend to forget that all that matters in life is love, support, and happiness -- our shelter.
