oppenheimer_takethewholemidrangeandboostit.jpgBelfast natives Shaun Robinson and Rocky O’Reilly, the duo who make up Oppenheimer, are not just the kind of guys who want to do everything. When it comes to music, they seem to want everything too.

Pop hooks, electronica, fuzzy guitars and synthesizers, prog rock and Eno inspire auditory musing. That should have been apparent when they released their self-titled debut in 2004 and had a rollicking single with “Breakfast in NYC”, but their follow-up record Take the Whole Midrange and Boost It gives them far more to do.

Sonically fuller and more layered than its predecessor, this is no more evident than on the first album track. Sounding more like a soundtrack to a drug-induced Japanese toy commercial, “Major Television Events” is the kind of song to kick off a slumber party and play repeatedly.

Robinson and O’Reilly keep things simple and they don’t even care if they skirt the UFO and old video game clichés of the electronica every now and then. “Fireworks Are Illegal in the States” truly defines them as outsiders as they have a laugh while pensively scratching their heads at all cultural gaps.

This record shows they do more than boost the midrange. They elevate it to a really fun level. Plus -- they have a song named “Cate Blanchett". How can we or they possibly lose? The album hits stores June 3rd - check it out!
