Safety Suit: Solid Melodic Rock Print E-mail
Interviews - Band/Musician

safetysuit_band.jpgSafety Suit has recently hit the airwaves with their single, "Someone Like You" from their debut album Life Left to Go, but these melodic rockers are not letting it get to their heads. The band's real charm is in their ability to be normal guys who are just happy to be making music together.

Offstage, the guys have quirks just like you and me. Singer Doug Brown is a golf fanatic, Tate Cunningham is a do-it-yourself builder, Jeremy Henshaw enjoys impersonating George Clooney, and Dave Garofalo tends to be reserved. On stage, they lose all inhibitions and transform into the freshest new talent in music today.

"I would say that this is a band that loves each other, loves to make music and loves to play for people," said Doug Brown. "It is melodic rock that hopefully gives you the chance to let go and that leaves you feeling better then when you started. That should do it."

Safety Suit is not completely new to the music scene despite recently releasing their first major label record. They played for many years under the name Crew, waiting for the right deal to come along.

"If anyone gives you a guarantee of success ... run," said Brown.

"The biggest hurdle you face when you're trying to get a deal is yourself," he explained. "You have to be patient and you have to wait until you know that it's right. No deal is better than a bad deal. As for making the album, you have to learn to understand the people around you. Before signing with a label you've been flying solo and now all the sudden you have a bunch of other people on board. If you only focus on your ideas and your way, you will cheat yourself out of the best possible record."

After getting the deal that was right for them with Universal Records, the band was able to focus their energy on creating a record that they could be proud of despite using some unconventional elements in their music. "We draw from so many styles that you might not hear in the music, but we try to take all the best parts of what we hear and make it into something people will enjoy," Brown said.

Beyond the sound, the band also had a message they wanted to relay in order to relate to their listeners. "I think it was really important to us that we make an album that inspired people. We obviously wanted to write great songs and record them with great production, but more than that we wanted the songs to have something behind them," he said. "We focused on that thought when we were choosing the songs. Which of these will speak to people in their everyday lives and will they feel better as a result of listening?"

A few bands have inspired the men of Safety Suit, and they would love to work with them all. "Coldplay? U2? Sting? Not sure if you've heard of any of them," Brown joked.

"We have had the two new Coldplay songs going non-stop lately, when you have music like that it's hard to listen to anything else," he said.

Brown said he would also love to interview one particular musician: Bono. "What he has been able to accomplish in music and in society is so inspiring to me," he said. "I would ask him what he has learned; what did he do that he would never change and where he could have done better. I wouldn't be able to answer that yet."

At the moment, the band is playing shows galore. Though they love playing, the band knows how to have a good time off the stage.

"It's great to just relax. We have a couple golfers in the group, being outside on a lake is incredible," Brown said. "It's nice to read a good book, but to just be with friends and family is all we really need."
