Kate Hudson has been cast in Rob Marshall's Nine, a film version of the Broadway musical, which won several Tony Awards in the 1980s. Hudson, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Penny Lane in the film Almost Famous, will join Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, and Oscar-nominated actress Penelope Cruz.
Nine tells the story of Guido Contini, a film director who must deal with his upcoming movie and all of the women in his life, and is based on the film 8 ½ by director Fellini. The musical was adapted for the big screen by Michael Tolkin and Anthony Minghella. Maury Yeston, Nine's original composer, will return for the film version. Daniel Day-Lewis will be playing film director Guido Contini and Cotillard will play his wife Luisa. Penelope Cruz has been cast as Contini's mistress; Kidman as his film's star, Dench as his film's costume designer, and Loren as his mother. Latest addition, Hudson, will be portraying an American journalist. The role of a whore with ties to Contini's youth has still yet to be cast. Filming is scheduled to begin in October this year in the United Kingdom.
