Wanderlust is filled to the brim with precisely the sort of overbearing, overprocessed faux rock music that makes the ears of any good music fan bleed. The trite lyrics seem to have been written in a half-assed attempt, and while such amateurish lyrics as “How far will you go / How deep is your love” might work if accompanied by a truly remarkable sound, that sound is certainly absent. In fact, there is a bit of a catch-22: while the lyrics are too insipid to succeed without some brilliant music for support, the sound of the album is such an overwhelmingly poor rendition of a mind-numbing average, that it falls completely flat without clever and intelligent lyrics to support it. I wouldn’t go so far as to pronounce Rossdale’s solo career dead in the water: he certainly has the potential to improve if he chooses to learn from his mistakes (such as, well, this entire album). However, it would be wise for all would-be listeners to hold tight until that happens.

Gavin Rossdale’s debut solo album, Wanderlust, definitely inspires in its listeners the sentiment after which it is named, but probably not in the spirit in which it is intended to do so. Exceedingly cliché and derivative, this bland and unoriginal “rock” album is sure to make any would-be buyer wander down a different aisle in the record store.
