Album: The Frequency
Artist: PlayRadioPlay!
Website: MySpace
Out of Fort Worth, Texas, seventeen year-old musical entrepreneur, Dan
Hunter, is the mastermind behind the electro-pop project, PlayRadioPlay!
Hunter's music passion started out as a hobby in late 2005. As a
self-taught musician, Hunter began posting his songs online,
catapulting them through his MySpace . Before long, his music rapidly
grew into a phenomenon, boasting over 30,000 plays per day within seven
months of posting the first song.
PlayRadioPlay! (PRP) houses a sound comparable to the likes of Postal Service
or Death Cab For Cutie. The lyrics of PRP's songs speak darkly, but
flow against a background of mesmerizing electronic beats and melodies.
Hunter describes his sound as "generally happy music with deep,
not-as-happy subject lines." The depth and meaning behind the music
shows that Hunter is brilliant far beyond his seventeen years.
At the age of fourteen, Hunter experienced the heartache of his
father's untimely passing. As a result, he struggled with addiction and
depression and ended up spending four months in rehab. He reemerged
with a new, more positive outlook on life, which is clearly reflected
in his music.
The six-track EP titled The Frequency, is due out in stores
later this month. On it are five original PRP songs and a memorable
cover of The Killers hit, "Mr. Brightside". Each track has a lengthy
title, a trait that can be found on the albums of bands such as Fall
Out Boy or Panic! At the Disco. Despite some similarities to other
artists in the music scene today, the music of PlayRadioPlay! still
strongly holds its own ground.
The lyrics, though mostly ominous, still flow poetically through the
music, guided by Hunter's soothing, youthful voice. The track "Confines
of Gravity" captures a story of entrapment that almost any teen can at
some point relate to: "I want to be an astronaut and get high; just
want to be free from the confines of gravity." Tracks such as "Even
Fairy Tale Characters Would Be Jealous" and "Compliment Each Other Like
Colors", tell similar stories of personal turbulence.
Hunter is in the process of bringing PlayRadioPlay! to the mainstream,
and has already been seen on tour with Fall Out Boy. He is now working
on his debut full length album with Grammy Award winning producer,
Garret Lee. The full PlayRadioPlay! album is expected to be released
sometime this fall.
Dan Hunter is a great representation of personal triumph and reflects
this through his music. He is a positive
influence for teens who are not given very many decent role models
these days. PlayRadioPlay! is a landmark in the evolution of popular
music and the world has certainly not seen the last of Hunter
and his incredible talents. The Frequency EP hits stores on April 24th.
Niceee. Dan hunter is an amazing kid. :)
