But then, when you consider the primary writer for the band is just that -- a writer -- he probably had a fairly clear idea of what he was going for with the disc running around in the back of his head by the time the decision to pursue the project was made. The band's name also has a literary connection; derived from a section of White Noise (DeLillio). Mikel Jollett was trying to finish a book when he started writing down his distractions and ended up with a collection of songs that document the struggles, hopes and sorrows we face moving through our lives and its changes. The band itself is a diverse collection of backgrounds and influences that came together to form a critically acclaimed quintet. Just don't anticipate any chamber music.Ranging from deep and dramatic, to up-tempo dance tunes, the overall sound is still up tempo. The lyrical subject matter is more frustration related. A prime example is "Moving On", a song about an encounter with a love interest that climaxes with the split-second rise of hope and anticipation, then plummets into the realization that she is with someone else. "Papillion" is the first of the dance tunes to hit you on the disc, by dance tunes I mean the harder-edge, thrashy kind you can envision someone rocking out to in their bedroom. Others like this one have more club potential . The album does contain a pre-existing hit in the LA area, "Sometime Around Midnight", a darker, more dramatic tune that brings back memories of Rockstar Supernova performances. There is a distinctive edge to their sound combined with a familiarity that has a tendency to equal success in the industry. The sound on the disc comes through loud and clear, and there is the ability to hear individual instruments without losing the overall sound that is frequently missing in debut releases.

This self-titled debut disc is an album of songs born out of trying to write a book. The kind of happy accident you can have when distracted from the task at hand, as opposed to the kind you can have when your trying to text and drive.
