Anjani Thomas: Blue Alert Print E-mail
Reviews - Music Mini

Image This soulful, vocal/piano-driven record oozes cool and sensuality, like the old jazz clubs from the 40s that are only still evident in old black and white pictures. Close your eyes and you just might smell the smoke, taste the martini and see the men in dapper suits escorting young ladies. Anjani Thomas's voice echoes over the instruments ever-so-smoothly, gliding past the occasional backup singer. Blue Alert is a beautiful new jazz album sure to entice and captivate you.

The Hawaii born singer/songwriter, best known as being Leonard Cohen's backup singer and partner, shells out a CD worth your while. Anjani attempts to create an old record able to stand out among the techno, new wave music made popular today. She does a fantastic job crooning the heartfelt lyrics she co-wrote with Cohen, who also produced this album.

Anjani's lyrics are what set this record apart from other acts that try the almost impossible task of making a simple record brilliant. She sings about love mostly, whether it is lost love or newly found. In the song "Nightingale", one of Anjani's folksier songs, she sings her tale about love, "Fare thee well my nightingale, I lived but to be near you, though you are singing somewhere still, I can no longer hear you."

Much like her producer, she is able to convey the stories through imagery and illusions. When you read the lyrics they are more like poetry, and could be bound together to form a book. To hear those words radiating with the piano playing softly, and the rare drums beating steadily, you get lost in the world that Anjani is surrounding you in.

Anjani won't be seen performing with the Arctic Monkeys or Wolfmother anytime soon, but she still will be filling the jazz club next door. You can get a taste of that world in her latest album, Blue Alert.
