Chicago-born Jennifer Beals recently did a quick Q and A with ACED to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Flashdance. She is most known for her roles as Alexandra "Alex" Owens in the 1983 film Flashdance and currently as Bette Porter on the lesbian-themed drama series The L Word. She has appeared in more than 50 movies throughout her career, which is no small feat.

Working 12-hour days on the set of L Word doesn't give Beals a lot of time to do interviews or relax, but we appreciate her taking the time to answer a few of our questions! Sometimes short is sweet, and to the point is necessary.

What, do you think, makes things so difficult to find good roles for women?

Because the industry is run by men, and our stories are not as immediate to them.

What has been the most challenging part of your career?

Staying alive.

How have you coped with that?

I continue to breathe.

How do you juggle your personal life with your professional life -- any tips for other working, professional women?

Be where you are.

What is the most rewarding experience you have had during your career?

The L Word has been really important in that it has been an honor to be of service to people and to give representation to a community that was relatively unrepresented in mainstream culture.

In terms of performance, the most wonderful experience was performing at V Day in New Orleans in an arena of 15,000 people. It felt more like an offering than a performance.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned in this industry so far?

The ability to keep breathing regardless of what is going on. Literally breathing.

What do you feel you still have to learn?

Everything.

What are some things you do in your down time?

Downtime?

-----------

Well, there you go - what down time?! Jennifer Beals is a busy lady, and currently filming the series The L Word. She is  featured in the latest print issue of MORE Magazine so make sure you check that out on stands now!

I totally agree with everything said, I find that Jennifer Beals has done a brilliant role as Bette and near Laurel Holloman, have shaped a couple so lovely, just look at all sites in Internet talking about the issue . Congratulations on a fantastic woman who we all hope to continue seeing more and if they make a movie of TLW, hopefully arrive by these sides and is issued at all levels, I think it would be very educational for Chilean society, which is so hypocritical.

Hello I think that Jennifer Beals is an amazing woman. I love her passion, her humbleness, her activism, her compassion. I could go on so Im sure you get the gist, I aspire to be as humble and educated about what is important in real life. Jennifer Beals makes me aware of what is important and what needs to be addressed in our society. Thank you Jennifer for your compassion. I love and respect you and would love to meet you one day.

I almost did not graduate from med school because i fell madly in love with JB. I watched the entire 4 seasons in 2 straight days right before my final exam. I think she's a phenomenal actress and i definitely want to see a lot of her, maybe on the big screen too. That would be great! And i would love to see Bette and Tina get married, maybe for the season finale if ever the show ends, which i hope to God will never happen.

i really think that Jennifer Beals is the best actress ever born. she is so talenten, beautiful and real.

i think that the TLW should go on for ever and that they have to make a motion picture of the TLW starring Jennifer Beals.

i hope to meet her someday in real life.

I fell in love with her when i first saw Flashdance when I was 5. .... Way before she was Bette Porter, Jennifer Beals was my first girl crush...she still is. So talented and humble...beautiful still as she was 25 years ago...If I may say so, she is one of the best actresses ever....
