Does anyone recall Remember the Titans? The true story of an upcoming underprivileged team of African American players whom during a time of extreme racial tension never thought they would make it, actually attempt and achieve the impossible? Well the same premise seems to hold true here for The Perfect Game. A group of impoverished boys from Monterrey Mexico with a pungent love for Baseball band together to form a team so that they may enter the Little League World Series for the first time. The story of true underdogs, these boys take the whole game and the title to become the first Non-U.S. Team to win the Little League World Series. The Perfect Game had the perfect mix of what America was feeling at the time, which was unchecked bias with unfair practices along side the revolutionaries who were willing to give these boys a chance at obtaining their dream of becoming baseball stars in their own right. Naming their team the Monterrey Industrials, these boys, their over-achieving Coach and comical yet always positive Minister create a timely classic that is bond to jerk a tear from even the manliest meat-head.The movie although as intriguing and as heart-felt as any underdog movie should be, fails to fully achieve the worthiness of its plot. Often times a bit too cheesy and somewhat unrealistically happy for what a true story of this subject matter should be. However I was highly pleased to see Clifton Collins who could easily be mistaken for Johnny Depp, star as the Coach in this movie, and who can forget good old Cheech Marin from Cheech and Chong, he stars as the Minister to the boys, and as some people know Cheech is notorious for his humorous anecdotes. There is a lot of time for baseball, so baseball fans don't worry, the whole thing isn't played around an uphill battle with stereotypes and racism. Honestly I enjoyed the film, very clean cut, funny, and charismatic. Like a suburbanite bank robber with a Harvard education it knew how to tell the story of these boys in a very honest and convincing way. As an added bonus to the film the footage shot in Mexico is exceptionally intriguing. Showing the traditions, the heritage and the scenery, really makes you feel as if your there, enduring a culture shock from another time and era. Final Analysis: I would recommend this film to any worthy baseball fanatic, fans of semi-chick flicks, and even the ordinary spectator. This film is definitely worth every penny.
