Peoples joins a crop of young singer/songwriters that aren’t far removed from the likes of John Mayer and Jason Mraz. He made a splash with his Los Angeles shows, and he’s captured the verve pretty well on his self-titled debut. U2 and Bon Jovi are among his inspirations, but the sound is often closer to early Don Henley and Tom Petty. The first single and track is the Tom Pettyish “Back Where I Started”, which demonstrates Peoples at his most contemplative about relationships. “Tell Me I’m Wrong” kicks off with an edgy guitar riff reminiscent of Lenny Kravitz, and swells to a sugary pop melody. He is at his most cynical on the rocker breakup number “Counting on Disaster”, and though his lyrics are mostly serviceable and lack any real poetry, they’re honest and direct. He could well be a force to be reckoned with among the top 40 for years to come if this record is any indication.
