Bargain Books for the College Crowd Print E-mail
News Briefs - Book

With another school year upon us, students are once again stocking up on textbooks. Many college students spend hundreds of dollars per semester simply fulfilling the requirements for their course load. Luckily, new advances on the internet have come along in order to help give students a break from the heavy costs of textbooks.

Websites have begun working in favor of students everywhere by offering unique deals on used books, e-books, and excerpts of books. Recently, CourseSmart.com began offering online and downloadable eTextbooks at half the cost of a standard textbook. The student orders a subscription to the e-book usually lasting 180 days. After the 180 days have passed, the subscription ends and the students no longer have to worry about what they’ll do with their old textbook.

According to the CourseSmart website, this computer-based service has saved students an average of $57 on the price of textbooks and spared over 84,500 trees!

On occasion, students are forced to buy entire books for classes despite knowing that the text is only used sparingly throughout the course. In another attempt to fatten students’ collective wallets, iChapters.com now offers individual eChapters from textbooks so students can buy only the information they need. The single chapters are priced as low as $1.99, but usually fall between $4.99 and $6.99.

Mike James  - I buy my books on ULOOP   |2008-09-05 19:49:52
It is so much easier and so much less expensive when students buy and sell with one another on their campus ULoop site. Everyone at UCLA uses it now and it is saving us tons of money that used to go to the book store. If you want to use it, all you need is a school email. Go to http://uloop.com
