Meyer Delays Midnight Sun Print E-mail

It seems like things have gone awry in Stephenie Meyer’s world of vampire love stories. Best-selling author Meyer has recently been working on a companion piece to her wildly successful Twilight series entitled Midnight Sun. The new book will tell the story from the perspective of resident vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen.

On August 28, Meyer posted a blog on her personal website announcing that a partial draft of Midnight Sun was posted online for all to see. The author was unhappy, to say the very least.

“I did not want my readers to experience Midnight Sun before it was completed, edited and published. I think it is important for everybody to understand that what happened was a huge violation of my rights as an author, not to mention me as a human being,” she said in the blog. “This has been a very upsetting experience for me, but I hope it will at least leave my fans with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic control.”

Meyer took advantage of that "artistic control" by announcing in the blog that Midnight Sun has been delayed indefinitely because her temperament just isn’t right anymore. “With writing, the way you feel changes everything. If I tried to write Midnight Sunnow, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die, which wouldn't dovetail too well with the original story.”

Despite writing that she would prefer fans did not read the leaked draft, Meyer posted it for everyone to see here.

Fans have had a list of different reactions to Meyer’s announcement, but it seems as if Meyer is punishing the masses for the actions of a few. In her blog, Meyer claims to have a good idea who posted the leak. In fact, many fans didn't even KNOW about the leak until Meyer posted it herself.

So why doesn't this author, who ranted on about her artistic control, take action against the individuals she believes responsible for disrupting it? Why did she not deny rumors that the leak was genuine, as authors such as J.K. Rowling have done in the past? Why did she let herself get so emotionally invested in the leak that she put her work on hold indefinitely, disappointing her legion of hardcore fans?

Sounds like a convenient excuse for a long break from her usual workload and pressure to me.

well she did wright 'the host' which had nothing to do with the twilight series (it was great) so she should have time to wright one she already has the basis of.

Well, to me, if it sounds like an excuse for a break from her vampire world, I couldn't blame her. I know that the fans (including myself) are greatly looking forward to Midnight Sun, but Meyer's been working on these books for a few years. After getting the four main books down, I think it would be nice to give her a break from writing and let her spend some well deserved time with her family.
