After winning both Best Director and Best Screenplay at the National Black Film Awards in 2007, director Craig Ross Jr. has decided to give his film a worldwide release—on MySpace. The independent film entitled The Mannsfield 12 will be released to site viewers. The story is a drama that follows 12 criminals in a maximum security prison who face crucial choices that test and show who they really are. "The Mannsfield 12 is special because it shows the human spirit,” Ross said. “A lot of times we forget the power that each of us has to create what we want. I think this movie is a reminder that no matter how bad our situation is we can create something different simply by changing our minds." Ross is glad to be involved with a new outlet that allows films to be delivered to the masses without the intervention of distributors. "Independent films that don't have theatrical releases need a new business model. The old business model doesn't benefit the filmmaker at all. It benefits the distributor," he said. Ross also has the support of his lead actor, Aaron D. Spears, whose production company was also involved with the film. "The whole internet aspect of generating revenue has been a huge selling point for me,” said Spears. “Now we go beyond regional distribution and open ourselves up to the world." The Mannsfield 12 will hit MySpace on September 29, 2008. Though MySpace has housed videos and mini-series in the past, this is the first feature film the social networking website has ever released.
