"It"s by far our heaviest record," says Dimitri Coats (Guitar and Vocals), when describing the Burning Brides" latest album Hang Love,
"and the best example yet of who we are." If the band"s latest album is
the best example yet of who they are, then it looks like it"s still
possible for a band to have a falling out and still come back to return
to the top. With seemingly simple- yet truly inspired and thought
provoking lyrics, mixed in with heavy guitar rifts, Hang Love proves that the Burning Brides haven"t lost their touch!
Burning Brides started when Dimitri Coats met now wife,, Melanie Coats
(Bass) right out of Julliard. Although they were late-comers to the
rock music scene, a few nights of listening to Sonic Youth and Black
Sabbath convinced Melanie that the two should become legit and start
their own band.
After relocating to Philadelphia, and picking up a
drummer, Burning Brides released their first album in 2001, Fall of the Plastic Empire. Despite their Indie status (Fall of the Plastic Empire
was produced for 5,000 bucks in a motorcycle garage) the band soon found
themselves opening for bands like the Melvins, and were picked up by the V2
recording label.
A few years later the band released their second album Leave No Ashes,
but downsizing at the label caused things to slowly unravel. Dimitri
and Melanie split and the band lost their drummer. Like a phoenix
rising from the ashes, the band would come back from their hard
times...their experiences would become the inspiration the band needed to
make a comeback. So after ditching the old label, and finding new
drummer Paul Beema, Burning Brides once again went out on their own.
Hang Love is a day-to-day diary of the band’s turbulent
era that kicks off with a strong proclamation in the deeply poetic
"Ring Around the Rosary", and keeps delivering with tales of reflection,
heartbreak, and hope set to an exhilarating pop-rock sound.
The songs
are performed with passion, from the music to the intense deliverance of
the lyrics. Tracks that really stand out are "She Comes to Me", a
head-nodding good plea of reminiscence and a heart not ready to let
go and "Hang Love", a melodious and soulful song that asks "Whatever
Happened to My Rock and Roll?" (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club).
Burning Brides’ latest album Hang Love is very entertaining, well written and expertly performed. Time seems to slide
past as you’re taken down a winding path of lyrical goodness. "Most
bands make their craziest records early on, then they mellow out,"
Dimitri comments. "We’re just the opposite. We’re stripping away more
and more of the fat and getting into the essence of who we are as a
band." I hope we see more of this tremendous band
in the future. Hang Love will be on shelves on June 19th.
