In the third adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham"s novel, Walter
(Edward Norton), a bacteriologist, marries Kitty (Naomi Watts), a bored
socialite who weds to escape a boring life and domineering parents.
Shortly after their marriage, the couple moves to Shanghai where Kitty soon
begins an affair with Charles Townsend, a married consulate (Live Schreiber).
Upon discovering Kitty"s infidelity, Walter accepts a job in a Chinese mountain
village in the throes of a cholera epidemic, forcing his unfaithful spouse to
accompany him.
Set in the Chinese countryside, the film brings to the
screen the tension and strain on a couple struggling with their own deteriorating
relationship in the midst of a country’s desperate fight for survival in the
wake of a deadly disease. As the couple is surrounded by the turmoil of death
and political unrest, they are forced to cope with their own choices in the
face of mortality.
