Based on the novel by Joseph Kanon, The Good German, a film set in post-World War II Germany, is packed with intrigue, mystery and romance. Shooting in black and white was a clever artistic decision on the part of the film’s director, Steven Soderbergh, as it is the perfect backdrop for this murder mystery—a throwback to the old-style Hollywood film noir. Also, because the film is shot in fullscreen rather than widescreen, the audience gets the feeling they are watching an old movie without sacrificing the polished quality of today’s film techniques. George Clooney portrays American military journalist Jake Geismer, whose chance encounter with ex-girlfriend, Lena (Cate Blanchett), lands him in the middle of a political murder mystery. Tobey Maguire also stars in the film as a sleazy, somewhat opportunistic corporal, who is also involved with Lena. The DVD includes no additional features, with only the film to focus on. |
