Letters From Iwo Jima is more than just a worthy counterpart of last year's companion film, Flags of our Fathers. Both films were directed by Clint Eastwood, and both are moving portrayals of the Battle of Iwo Jima, but that is where the similarity ends. Whereas Flags of Our Fathers chronicles the lives of the American troops involved in the battle, Letters From Iwo Jima, tells the story of the battle from the perspective of the Japanese soldiers. This is a very sobering film, with lots of moving scenes in which the actors eloquently depict the fear and uncertainty that was surely felt by many of the actual Japanese soldiers, most of whom died at Iwo Jima. For this reason, and because the Japanese have few records of what actually happened, some liberties have admittedly been taken to fill in the gaps of the story. The directors do an amazing job with this, however, and the film comes across beautifully.
