Directed by: Tom Shadyac
Newly elected to Congress, the polished, clean-cut newscaster, Evan
Baxter (Carell), leaves
Buffalo behind and shepherds his family to suburban Virginia.
Once there, his life gets turned upside-down when God (Freeman) appears and
mysteriously commands him to build an ark. His befuddled family
can't decide whether Evan is having an extraordinary mid-life
crisis or is truly onto something of Biblical proportions.
Some of you may think back to Jim Carrey when he was Bruce Almighty—don't. This film is totally different.
I went into this movie not expecting much at all. Don't get me wrong, I love Morgan Freeman and Lauren Graham, but I thought this movie would be...well...dumb. Of course, I am not above admitting when I am wrong either. Evan Almighty is actually pretty decent—in more ways than one.
The Baxter character in this production, considering I absolutely hated him in Bruce Almighty, was actually written as a likable guy - only slightly retarded. By the end of the film, most people will like him after witnessing his evident theatrical transformation on screen.
There is a bunch of animal humor, guaranteed to make anyone laugh - who can resist laughing at bird bombs, green, projectile spit or llamas with hammers?
Overall, the film is a very light-hearted, wholesome comedy. It isn't too sappy and the romance isn't too eye-rolling ridiculous. The messages communicated are short, sweet and crystal-clear.
If you really can change the world with one act of random kindness at a time, I suppose it is my turn to do so by saying this movie was a bit of alright. Although, I am not sure the "ask and ye shall receive" aspect of the film is quite true - I am still waiting for my 5 million...
