For centuries human beings have contemplated Earth's nearest planetary neighbor, Mars, dreaming impossible dreams of exploring its surface and divining its mysteries. Now the impossible has become possible. The Mars mission, which sent two intrepid, death-defying explorers—Spirit and Opportunity, the mars rovers—to the Red Planet was documented.

Through the eyes of these remarkable robots, viewers can now see Mars in a way that no one ever has. This important expedition accomplished far more than the simple transmission of thousands of Martian images. The rovers actually discovered traces of ice within the rocks of Mars. The discovery marked clear proof that water once ran on the surface--a giant leap forward in answering that most haunting of questions: Is there life on Mars?

DVD Features:

  • Bonus Movie: Mars and Beyond - Walt Disney's 1957 investigation into the mysteries of the universe and space travel. (50 minutes)
  • Mars: Past, Present & Future - Personal reflections on Mars from the filmmakers, JPL Rover team members and students from the Imagine Mars program

Critique:

This is not exactly what I thought it was. I expected a much more...dramatic look at Mars through this film, however, was met with the mechanical evolution of two robots that were being sent to Mars instead. Don't get me wrong - once you realize you aren't getting an entire feature about "Mars" it is actually rather interesting.

The featurettes included on the DVD are great all by themselves. This is definitely something to grab if you are interested in the "how" behind travels in space. Hopefully, one day (maybe before I am dead...), we'll get to see people land on Mars - and they will make a proper movie about that!
