Synopsis: As a serial killer terrifies the San Francisco Bay Area and taunts police with his ciphers and letters, investigators in four jurisdictions search for the murderer. The case will become an obsession for four men as their lives and careers are built and destroyed by the endless trail of clues.

Critique:

There have been many stories to weave their way around the fact and fiction behind the Zodiac killings in the San Francisco Bay area in the 60s and 70s. No tale as gripping as this production, however.

The performances by Ruffalo, Gyllenhaal and Downey are magnificent. It's a shame Edwards is so underutilized.

Everything works well in this movie to set the mood, from the first shots panning over San Francisco, to the provocative, haunting lighting throughout.

The story itself unfolds in an interesting pattern, definitely enough to keep you interested until the end. Some of the scenes are a little gritty and graphic. A woman being stabbed in other films, for example, is just a woman being stabbed—in this film you can almost feel the wounds as you watch.

Because this film is based on true events, the conclusion cannot be anymore certain than the facts behind the fiction. No worries, things are still tightly woven with a satisfying ending...with a few hints and nods on the way.
