Throw a rock at a rack of new release CDs and it"s bound to hit more than a few from a singer-songwriter with a famous parent. With luck, one of them might even be able to write a half-decent tune, let alone play more than three chords on a guitar or sing as painlessly as possible.

When it comes to musical pedigree however, 22 year old Colbie Caillat hits it right on the mark, and not just because she can do all of these with ostensible ease. Caillat is the daughter of the innovative Ken Caillat who co-produced and engineered the legendary Fleetwood Mac album Rumours, among many other notable musical undertakings.

Caillat delivers the goods on her new record Coco with light, no nonsense rock that never gets too sugary nor makes faux attempts of shallow rebellion. Caillat’s approach is bona fide and she pretty much sums herself up in her first single (and MySpace hit) “Bubbly” in which she sings about a youthful first taste of love. Given only a casual glimpse, it may seem joyfully naïve, even arcane, but Caillat’s melodies and vocal are assured and they grow on you.

Her influences really do this straight forward pop music justice. She sings with the bouncy ease of John Mayer, the artful soul of Joni Mitchell and thoughtful contemplation of James Taylor—with a whispery unassuming earnestness that’s all her own.

Hanging around with the likes of Brian Wilson and Herbie Hancock probably didn’t hurt this album's gorgeous opener “Oxygen” in which Caillat willfully gives into love (“I found a boy / Who had a dream of making everyone smile / He was sunshine / I fell over”),  or the mid tempo “Feelings Show”, well supported by strings and piano that know their place behind Caillat’s soothing alto.

Colbie Caillat’s warm and pleasant debut is the heartfelt soundtrack to go with that glass of lemonade and lawn chair on a beautiful summer’s day we need more often.
