 Photo by Sharif Hamza Traditionally, the Seven Deadly Sins were lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride, but in a world fascinated with things new and improved, upgraded and digitally re-mastered, it is unthinkable that sins identified in the 6th Century A.D. could tempt today"s trendy consumer. With so much emphasis on multi-tasking, modern sins must apply not only to eternal life, but to present day as well, hence, the re-mix.
Alas, the obsession with being online is not sin free. It leads to gluttony (you must munch while surfing the net), sloth (who has time for energetic pursuits when being sedentary is so much fun) and wrath (the reaction of a hungry family when Mom has spent all evening on the computer instead of cooking dinner). Thank goodness for FAST FOOD, a potential solution to Mom’s internet dilemma! Today’s lifestyles practically demand that people eat fast food – a biscuit on the way to work – a burger and fries at lunch because there’s no time for a sit down meal in a nice restaurant – a bucket of chicken and double mashed potatoes with gravy on the way home because working all day left you too tired to cook. On the surface, this might seem like salvation rather than sin, but on average, a typical fast food burger and fries weighs in at a hefty 1,200 calories, and that doesn’t even include anything to wash it down with!
But beware ... if someone gives you chocolate, you’re proud of getting such a delightful gift. If you have chocolate, you’re greedy and reluctant to share, you succumb to gluttony and eat it all, leading you to slothful laziness from all the weight you’ve gained. If someone else has chocolate, you envy them. If they won’t share their chocolate, they risk feeling your wrath. And lest we forget, chocolate has long been thought an aphrodisiac – indulging in the sensual pleasures of consuming chocolate with your sweetheart can often lead to a lust for more. STARBUCKS, a coffeehouse chain based in the United States but rapidly expanding worldwide, can be found as stand-alone retail stores, and in many other retail outlets such as variety stores and book sellers. They have locations on college campuses and pre-packaged Starbucks products can even be found in grocery stores. Starbucks has become a way of life for many people, some might even call it an addiction. Patrons depend on Starbucks to help them wake up in the mornings, help them recharge throughout the day, or to keep them going late at night when they need to stay awake. For many, it defines their social circles, serving not only as a place to have coffee, but to get a bite to eat, visit with friends, or take advantage of wireless internet access. Many Starbucks locations even offer special activities such as book signings and live music. What with all the consumable deadly sins, SPANDEX (or elastane as it is more commonly known outside the US) is practically a must. A lightweight material with incredible stretching power, spandex is used extensively in the apparel industry for everything from hosiery to swimsuits to athletic uniforms. The form fitting properties of spandex make it extremely comfortable, but also makes it a material which should not be worn by all people.
The cartoon is designed to appeal to adults as well as children, by incorporating non-human characters who are adults with a child-like innocence, but in situations sometimes fraught with innuendo and situations intended to go over younger viewer’s heads. Apparently the formula is working because SpongeBob is famous throughout much of the world, and is represented in practically everything from Macaroni and Cheese to boxer shorts. Also famous is a sexy young Brit named DANIEL RADCLIFFE. What? Dan doesn’t do it for you? Well then, substitute with Johnny Depp ... if that doesn't float your boat, you have issues... The world today is obsessed with fame, and like chocolate, Dan is an ageless obsession. As Harry Potter, he has captured the hearts of little kids, teenagers, and grown-ups the world over. Children emulate him, teenage girls (and loads of older women) fancy him, teenage boys envy him, and most adults who know anything at all about him can’t help but respect him.
He has proven himself on film in the Potter franchise, December Boys, and he took London’s West End by storm earlier this year, making his bare-bones stage debut in the remake of Peter Shaffer’s Equus. If you need proof that Dan has become a world-wide obsession, look at the statistics for Equus. Countless people, including myself, flew to London from all over the world just to see Dan, and in the week that I was there, I met fans from several other states in the U.S., as well as from Australia, Denmark, France and Portugal. And that's saying something...

THE INTERNET – now there’s a deadly sin for you if ever there was one! Many people spend the lion’s share of their day doing work that involves a computer, and would never want to go home at night just to keep doing what they’ve done all day at work, right? Wrong! Oh no – the demons of cyberspace created the internet, so people could go home at night and rush through dinner to log on to their computers to check e-mail, chat with friends, shop, and catch up on the latest news or celebrity gossip.
CHOCOLATE – a sin you can really sink your teeth into, and you can even buy “Seven Deadly Sins” chocolates now! Who doesn’t love good chocolate? It’s an ageless sin, loved by toddlers and grandparents alike. It’s easy to come by, it never goes out of style, and it’s a feel good food.
Come to think of it, Spandex probably shouldn’t be worn by all cartoon characters either. While the square pants worn by Nickelodeon’s SPONGEBOB may or may not be made of spandex, they’re certainly tight enough on the highly popular yellow resident of Bikini Bottom.
Dan’s natural talent combines with a strong work ethic, a fierce sense of determination, and the ability to focus on his goals, all of which serve to make him an exceptional role model for young people (some old people could take a few lessons) and to make him a young celebrity with a bright future ahead.
