Balls of Fury has a great movie trailer, filled with sight gags and ping-pong tricks
that should excite any teen to 25 year-old.
Look for a big box-office tally this weekend if the trailer has anything
to do with it. Unfortunately, for myself,
after seeing the film, I wasn"t that impressed. I did find the first 40-minute
buildup very funny, but the humor dies out and it becomes a silly frenzy.
If you are into the slapstick of MAD
TV, Mind of Mencia, or even the recently resurrected George Lopez Show, then
this is your kind of film. If you haven’t
experienced the aforementioned TV shows, maybe you have seen films like Kung
Pow, Reno 911: Miami or Police Academy 3...I think you get the idea.
In the
underworld of ping-pong, it’s more than a sport played on a table with a little
ball—it’s a “blood thirsty” competition that includes huge amounts of money,
dead bodies and bragging rights. When the FBI gets wind of an illegal ping-pong
tournament being set up by master criminal and archenemy Feng (Walkin), they assign Agent Ernie Rodriguez (Lopez) to lead a secret task
force to bring him down.
In Rodriguez’s search for an undercover agent to
assist him, he picks Randy Daytona (Fogler), a former runner-up ping-pong
champion, who he finds working in a Las Vegas dive.
Together they devise a plan to topple Feng and his trove of depraved
ping-pongers.
The training sessions that Master
Wong (Hong), the ‘worlds best’ ping-pong teacher and restaurateur, puts
Daytona though are hilarious. And, Maggie
Q who plays Wong’s fists-of-fury daughter, adds to the comedic pong exercises
with her feisty acrobatic antics.
George Lopez in the role of the FBI agent was brilliant casting. His comedic style and line delivery gives a
boost to the otherwise lack-luster film.
If
you have no other form of light-hearted entertainment this weekend, you may want to
take a chance on Balls of Fury, but don't say you haven't been warned!
