Girl trio, Northern State, have out done themselves with their third full-length album. Can I keep this pen? shows how much the band has grown musically since their 2004 release, All City. The album begins with "Mic Tester", a song where all three girls take a turn on the mic. It is followed by an astonishing mixture of singing, harmonies, raps and beats you will catch yourself dancing to for days. Songs such as "Cowboy Man" and "Cold War" deal with social and political issues. While discussing such controversial topics, the girls of Northern State have a good time with catchy lyrics like: "Now that we got some real candidates / Can we please come correct in 2008?" from "Sucka Mofo". Not all of the song lyrics on this album revolve around politics, however. Hesta Prynn, Spero, and Sprout show they can have a good time too, in the songs "Ohhh Girl" and "Mother May I". Northern State has shown their true talent with this album. It is one you should definitely have in your collection! |
