With a combined 15 Academy Award nominations, you can't go wrong... Anne of a Thousand Days and Mary, Queen of Scots are two fabulous period films following the true-life stories of some of the most influential figures in England's history—King Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth I, Anne Boleyn and Mary, Queen of Scots.

Lavish costumes, stunning technicolor photography and critically-acclaimed performances garnish these timeless classics.

  • Sneak Peek of the upcoming Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Anne of a Thousand Days:

This film is set against the pageantry and political intrigue of 16th century England, tracing the ill-fated marriage between Anne and her King, from its spirited beginning to its tragic finale. Although not historically accurate in its entirety, Anne of a Thousand Days exudes a colorful, dramatic display of powerful emotion and humorous, ironic poetics.

Richard Burton and Genevieve Bujold give fabulous portrayals of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn respectively.

Mary, Queen of Scots:

Mary Stewart (Redgrave), Queen of Scotland, returns to her troubled homeland following the death of her husband, the King of France, and the death of her mother, former Queen of Scotland.

From the moment Mary reclaims her throne, Elizabeth (Jackson), Queen of England, seeks to oust her, fearful that Mary will one day have a son who will ultimately rule both countries (good call).

Aided by Mary's deceitful brother James, Elizabeth schemes to arrange an ill-fated marriage between Scotland's Queen and a vain nobleman with allegiance to Tudor England. Mary and Elizabeth's undaunted quests for power leave a trail of deception, murder and holy war.

This grand epic drama provides a sweeping portrait of two of the world's most fascinating women, and the relentless power struggle that marked their lives and changed the course of history.

Redgrave and Jackson give outstanding performances, bringing to life the strength, spirituality, and arduous callousness to which both of these women used to rule their kingdoms.

The character play back and forth between these two well-known royals in Mary, Queen of Scots is classic. Watching Mary, as her world unfolds around her, is disheartening. And while watching, you can't help but secretly hope they will both release their stubbornness and just be friends...alas, such is the world of a queen. No surrender!

Don't let the date fool you, this movie is an amazing production—one not to be missed.

Overall—Even though the historical facts are not entirely accurate in the productions, this 2-disc compilation of dramatic English history is priceless to anyone valuing a good story, riveting performances or captivating entertainment.
