30 Days of Night may not have a huge plot, but it sure grabbed my attention and kept me glued to the screen. It"s a veritable white-knuckled horror flick, involving a lot of vampire attacks with gruesome results.

The basic plotline involves a city in Alaska, where during one full month of the year, it is in total darkness. The population dwindles during the 30 days, from over 500 people to 156, consisting of shop owners, their families and the police.

On the first night of darkness, a mysterious gang of vampire-like creatures invades the city, looking to have a ‘bloody’ good time. After feasting on 80 percent of the townspeople, the remaining few left put up a fight to the finish.

The stars of this film are the make-up, camera operators, sound tech and special effects crews. The make-up used to depict the pale skin of the vampires stained with blood from recent victims, aided by special implants of sharp jagged teeth used to tear open the throat of their quarry, create frightening images that I won’t easily forget.

Add excellent cinematography that captures a cold, dark setting of the Alaskan continuous night, coupled with the sound effects of the dreadful screams of the vampire tribe, and what you have are very intense seasonings for horror.

I am, however, amazed that Josh Hartnett accepted a role in this film. It’s a huge detour from his macho roles in Lucky Number Sleven, Black Hawk Down and Pearl Harbor. Josh does do a good job as Eben, the town sheriff, but almost any B actor could have played the role as well. Doing this film will probably do nothing to advance his position in the acting world.

On the other side of the coin, Ben Foster, who was recently seen in 3:10 To Yuma, emits the fear of Hades in his portrayal of The Stranger, the character who paves the way for the vampire tribe into the city. These two roles should help Ben move up to some greater challenges that will lift his sagging career.

FINAL ANALYSIS: A ‘Hollywood’ horror night flick that should attract major fear fans flocking to the theatres to get their fix of guts and gore.
