Synopsis: With topics that include everything from sexuality, alcoholism, family conflict, guns in school/school violence, and censorship, My So-Called Life: The Complete Series runs the thematic gamut by providing some of the most important issues facing teens both in the past and present. The series is truly television drama that transcends time. My So-Called Life: The Complete Series presents all nineteen episodes in the life of 15 year-old high school sophomore Angela Chase (Danes). The six-disc DVD box set features groundbreaking television that began the teenage-angst oriented dramas so common in modern day programming, yet, in so many ways, superior to today’s small-screen productions. DVD Features:
Critique: Fine acting, combined with a number of relevant topics, makes this all-too-short series a keeper. Two episodes in particular stood out, “The Substitute” and “Betrayal”, which epitomizes the complexities of relationships and human nature, while showing how difficult it is to come to grips with one’s own personal flaws. Included in the six-disc box set series is a wonderful soundtrack with music from Violent Femmes, Cranberries, Live, Sonic Youth, The Ramones, and R.E.M. The one annoying problem with the series is the abundance of tears that Claire Danes sheds throughout many of the episodes. At times, the viewer may come to the conclusion that the character of Angela Chase has either got hormonal issues, or is having withdrawals because she forgot to take her Prozac. Nonetheless, My So-Called Life still stands as one of the finest coming-of-age programs ever aired on prime-time television. |
