This Christmas we find Tim Allen playing jolly Saint Nick, yet again. The film starts out just days before Christmas. Instead of making his list and checking it twice, Santa is busy thinking up ways to make wife Carol, (Mitchell) happy during her final days of pregnancy. The first ever for Santa and wife.

Tossing the rule book, Clause invites the in-laws (Arkin and Ann-Margret), for the nearing birth and holiday festivities. To appease his somewhat needy and unsympathetic wife, Clause and the elves come up with an elaborate scheme to keep the skeptical in-laws in the dark, while keeping to the S.O.S (Secret of Santa).

Completely unaware that their daughter is the wife of good ol’Father Christmas, mom and dad believe they are visiting their daughter’s home in Canada. The idea of Canadians being half the size of an average adult human, running around with toys, in blindingly colorful clothing, did garner a chuckle.

Enter Jack Frost (Short), the whimsical yet manipulative elf-gone-bad. He adds just the right amount of cranberry sauce to this otherwise dry turkey. Frosts’ villainous take-over of the North Pole, turning it into a homogenized Vegas-themed park was a nice touch. I found myself wishing it existed, if only to see Martin Short, in all of his Liza Minnelli glory, sing, “North Pole North Pole” to the tune of “New York New York.”
