Critique: The High School Musical movies are both loved and loathed worldwide—loved by tweens and younger teens especially, and loathed by those who consider themselves "above" what they consider cheesy and simplistic. People who dislike the movies usually argue that the series is made for eight year-olds. I don't necessarily disagree—but these movies are just built to be fun little numbers, not to be wry and thought-provoking. And since when is that a bad thing?
High School Musical was a sweet, naïve, and playful little movie. The sequel might be harder to take for some. Yes, the story is weaker than that of the first movie. Yes, there are even more ridiculous plot twists. Yes, there are still some really stupid-sounding lines. But it's still a fun movie, and the songs are even better than those in the first movie.
It's hard to find people to watch the High School Musical movies with, given how a lot of people don't want to admit they might actually enjoy teeny-bopper movies other than John Hughes flicks. But the movies are fun, and if you're okay with admitting that you liked High School Musical, you'll enjoy High School Musical 2. Gather all your girlfriends, get into your PJs, braid each other's hair, pop in the movie, and just have fun with it!
